Prostate Specific Antigen

The prostate produces PSA – prostate specific antigen, a protein that aids in the liquefaction of semen. While it’s normal for a small amount of PSA to be present in the bloodstream, elevated levels may indicate underlying prostate issues.

Men, especially those over the age of 50, or those with risk factors such as a family history of prostate cancer, are encouraged to undergo regular PSA testing.

Elevated PSA levels may suggest various conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), or, in some cases, prostate cancer. It’s essential to note that a high PSA level doesn’t conclusively indicate cancer, but it warrants further investigation.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty initiating or stopping urination, blood in the urine or semen, or pain during urination should consider a PSA test.
